Dueño de empresa solicita ayuda gubernamental tras tragedia en Azua

Santo Domingo.- Damián Guzmán, the owner of «Gaby Super Fría», the venue where the tragic accident early Sunday morning resulted in at least 10 fatalities and dozens more injured, in his initial press statement, appealed to the government to support the Bastida community in the Las Yayas municipality of Azua province.

«Unfortunately, we here have no support from the Central Government, and I believe this is the first time that the Bastida community is being mentioned because of a tragedy, but we have had no official government support, and many cases like this have been overlooked,» stated the businessman.

Furthermore, he noted that the area lacks retaining walls and highlighted that this issue falls outside his business’s responsibility since the accident happened on the road, not within the premises.

Guzmán raised his voice, calling on President Luis Abinader to implement road safety policies for the benefit of the community.

The site was shut down by the Directorate of Alcoholic Beverage Control (COBA) pending an investigation into the incident.

In a circulated video capturing the incident, a truck loaded with avocados is seen crashing into a crowd that was blocking the road.

The driver, identified as Ángel Encarnación Bautista, fled the scene after the crash but, according to reports, surrendered on Sunday night to face the consequences.
