Port-au-Prince (EFE).- The police operation conducted in recent days in the stronghold of gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, known as ‘Barbecue’, in Haiti, resulted in the death of several members of the armed groups coalition Vivre Ensemble (Live Together) and led to the seizure of firearms, drones, cars, motorcycles, and drugs. The National Police of Haiti (PNH) reported that specialized units stepped up efforts in the operation in the Bas Delmas area, where ‘Barbecue’s’ headquarters is located, aiming to dismantle the Vivre Ensemble coalition.

Law enforcement officers killed several criminals in the shootout and arrested an unspecified number of gang members.

Impact on the criminal gang

Lionel Lazarre, deputy spokesman for the PNH, stated that they seized 13 firearms (including a Kalashnikov rifle), three drones, seven vehicles, three motorcycles, and substances believed to be marijuana.

Lazarre said, “within the framework of a series of operations carried out in the West department (where Port-au-Prince is located), significant progress has already been made,” and he mentioned that a series of measures have been adopted to dismantle the armed gangs terrorizing Haiti, which control around 85% of the capital.

Highlighting the operations conducted across Haiti, including the West department, where ‘Barbecue’s headquarters is located in Delmas 2 and Delmas 6, the deputy spokesman assured that joint actions with the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) continued.

Increase in police operations against organized crime in Haiti

The Police are stepping up operations in the West department (specifically in several areas of the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince) and other departments such as Artibonite, North, Center, and Southeast, with the goal of dismantling powerful armed groups.

As part of these actions in the country, the Police arrested suspected gang members and individuals involved in self-kidnapping, killed about twenty alleged gangsters, took control of police buildings, dismantled a car theft network, issued arrest warrants, and seized thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Meanwhile, the multinational mission announced the establishment of its third advanced operational base in the building housing the General Inspection of the Haitian National Police in Bas Delmas, aiming to “secure the coastline and surrounding areas.”

In a statement, the MSS highlighted that “the police quickly and firmly repelled the gangs’ attempts to disrupt the installation of the base, ending the resistance right from the start.”

Call to the international community

This operational base, it noted, is “an essential resource in the fight against gang activity in the region” and will serve as a strategic support center, improving response times in key areas such as the national port, the Delmas district, or vulnerable coastlines.

These are areas exploited by the gangs for arms and drug trafficking, activities that fund their violent operations, it stated.

With this base (the third established by the multinational mission after those set up at the Police Academy and in Pont-Sondé, in Artibonite), the MSS aims to “bring security closer to citizens,” committed to “restoring Haiti’s former splendor and ensuring the security and wellbeing” of Haitians.
