Un aliado fundamental para preservar la visión
Maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for eye health, according to ophthalmology experts. Recent studies and specialist recommendations highlight that certain foods help protect the eyes from damage caused by light exposure, pollution, and aging.
The ophthalmologist José María Aguilar, a member of the Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (SEO), emphasizes that a diet based on the Mediterranean diet, with abundant consumption of vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish, and cereals, provides antioxidant compounds that reduce the risk of conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy. Among the most recommended nutrients are lutein, carotenoids, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamin E, found in foods like spinach, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, nuts, fatty fish, eggs, and vegetable oils.
Aguilar points out that, while these nutrients are best absorbed through diet, in some cases healthcare professionals may recommend antioxidant or omega-3 supplements, always under medical supervision. Prevention, combined with healthy habits, thus becomes the best strategy for maintaining optimal vision throughout life.
