Port-au-Prince (EFE).- Over 20 people have died and at least 15 are injured following an assault by the armed group Gran Grif in the town of Pont Sonde in Haiti, according to local sources.

The death toll may rise after the early morning attack led by the gang Gran Grif, which is based in the town of Savien (Petite Riviere, Artibonite), and forced mass evacuations to the public square in the city of Saint-Marc by the area’s residents.

Meanwhile, the injured are being treated at medical facilities, particularly at Saint Nicolas Hospital in Saint-Marc, which is located about a hundred kilometers from Port-au-Prince.

As of this morning, Pont Sonde area in the Haitian department of Artibonite is under the control of the armed group.

In response, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security stated that instructions have been given to the Haitian National Police to “restore order and eliminate all those causing terror in the Artibonite department.”

“These crimes will not go unpunished. The perpetrators and their accomplices will be pursued to their last hideouts,” according to a statement from the ministry, which reaffirmed its commitment to take “all necessary measures to restore peace to the country and allow the populace to freely conduct their activities.”

This assault happened shortly after the United States and the UN announced sanctions against the leader of Gran Grif, known as Luckson Elan.

Haiti is experiencing extreme violence from armed gangs, causing thousands of individuals to leave their homes to escape insecurity.

According to the latest report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), over 700,000 people – over half of whom are children – are currently internally displaced in Haiti.

The most recent data shows a 22% increase in internally displaced individuals since June, significantly worsening the humanitarian situation.
