La “Diablita” de Mara Salvatrucha es condenada a 50 años de prisión
New York — Leniz Escobar, also known as “Diablita” and leader of the Mara Salvatrucha gang (MS-13), received a 50-year prison sentence this Tuesday for her involvement in the grisly murder of four young men in 2017 in Central Islip, New York. Judge Joseph F. Bianco in the Eastern District of New York’s federal court handed down the sentence after Escobar was found guilty of racketeering, murder, and obstruction of justice.
24-year-old Escobar lured the victims, Justin Llivicura, Michael López, Jorge Tigre, and Jefferson Villalobos, into a trap set by MS-13 members on April 11, 2017. The young men were savagely killed with machetes and sharp objects, having been accused of allegiance to a rival gang. Only one of the five youths taken to the park managed to survive.
“The defendant proved her loyalty to MS-13 by drawing the young men to their deaths. Her sentence mirrors the severity of her actions and the sorrow inflicted upon the families,” stated Breon Peace, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
James E. Dennehy, the assistant director in charge of the FBI in New York, mentioned that Escobar boasted about her role in the killings, valuing her gang status over human life. Meanwhile, Suffolk County Police Department’s acting commissioner, Robert E. Waring, described the murders as “brutal and senseless,” highlighting Escobar’s pivotal role in the crime.
The trial also uncovered that Escobar had destroyed evidence and lied to authorities, claiming to have been the victim of a robbery on the night of the crime. She is the fifth individual to be sentenced for these murders, as part of a federal effort to dismantle MS-13, one of Long Island’s most violent gangs.
